This just in... Or rather out of the wall trim that came pried off near the third floor stairs.
From the Portland Evening Express June 1, 1984:
“Emilio Sanchez, Spain def. Tomas Smid (14), Czechoslovakia, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4.”
Yep Czechoslovakia. Also note the West German Westphal fell to the big Swede Gunnarsson.
Oh, how things can change over a little time! Just having got back from a visit to Poland, I'm particularly glad that the iron curtain is rusted and fallen. Not something I can say about the state of American infrastructure though.
There must have been some piece of wall renovation that happened here back in 1984. Someone took the sports page clipping and stuck it where it would be found. The other side shows the Celtics' historic win in the playoffs against the Lakers, of course.
