putting the labor back in labor day

8 SEPTEMBER 2010
Here is a shot of some cabinets going in over labor day weekend. They came cheap, and are made of plywood and hardwood, which is good. The drawers and doors seem to work well, but will probably be even better with hardware. The quality is one half step above ikea.

Other bits of progress that felt very huge, even though they’re really small were: re-installing the dishwasher (still works great!) Bringing the fridge back to its original spot, and cleaning the drywall out of it. Honestly, I’ve never had to vacuum a fridge before this project. And lastly, we’ve now got 3 of 4 panel radiators mounted strategically. Good news because Thursday we’re forecast to get low 50s or even 40s at night.

Panel radiators are cool, er warm, because they work by radiative heating, as opposed to convection heating. As I understand it a radiative transfer of heat in a room is more efficient and comfortable – it happens to be the way one gets warm when sitting out in the sun (OK not always comfortable). The sun’s rays hit a surface and warm that surface. A hydronic baseboard merely lets hot water flow around the house and warm a column of air around it by small aluminum fins. Eventually the room’s warm air will circulate by convection around to the rest of the space, but not in a uniform or particularly comfortable way. Until I fill the system and fire it for the first time, this is of course, conjecture. As always , more to come…

  1. Things are really moving along nicely. I am curious about many things -- wall colors, bathroom, and so forth. Do you have any furniture in? It will be great to see more photos. The cooler weather must help you to stay focused, no?

  4. Hi Andy,
very cool to hear you're launching a project close by. We got the cabinets from, as it turns out, craigslist. So the circle of life is complete- not too helpful though.

I'm petty sure if you googled "shaker cabinets" some dark colored jobs similar to what we've got will come up...
    cheers -will
