ripping down ceilings

10 JUNE 2010
We had the gusto in us Saturday morning – 29 May. This is counting roughly eighteen (18) hours after closing. No rest for the paper-weary when there is demolition! The first objective (I have been learning to pin point objectives recently) would be to remove the VARIOUS layers of the ceiling, with out ever getting a) to a point where one could see the sky b) shocked by the wires run inside the dropped ceilings c) struck by the many different forms of insulation found in the bays (more to come on this last one.)

None of these issues proved a real problem – apart from getting hit by crap falling from the bays. The size of the task, and the amount of the debris generated soon became apparent. I can’t say that lugging bags of old dry cellulose insulation out of the apartment was too bad. The plaster and laths were another story. The cracked plaster was eager to come down, while the wire mesh armature, the 1”x3” strapping under the paperboard ceiling, were not.

I have to believe that the ceiling removal will be a great improvement here for a number of reasons. One, the added head room. Two, the electrical was in serious need of rehab. Three, the lighting can be rearranged. Four, insulation can be added and some air sealing done. Five, adding a fixture and small chase for an overhead LCD projector so we can watch Krtek on a big picture.

And for a classic twist of irony, just as we’d finished sailing all of the 2’ x 2’ dropped ceiling tiles out the window into the dumpster (where they were promptly soaked in a rainstorm), we realized that our neighbor downstairs needed a couple of an identical type replaced! Now I don’t suppose anyone needs 2000 or so lath boards with lots of square nails in them?
