Chronoblog
what a place
8 JUNE 2010
Hi there my name is Will, this is a blog about a renovation project at the house on 76 Melbourne St. in Portland, Maine. I see myself as the primary driver behind this project. I am a perfectionist, and the state of the upstairs unit where I may spend a large portion of the life as I know it, while habitable, just seemed to be missing that modern functionality. I also cant abide dropped ceilings that come to just 4" over my head.
I consider the primary victim of this project to be Marta Kessler. She is to be co-inhabitant, gardener supreme, and mistress of the domicile. The minute I got my grungy hands on the place - thanks to a large sum of money lent by questionable people with lots of it - I thought: "my, couldn't I make a couple nice changes here and there." So, much to her chagrin, I've decided to make a project out of it, and a blog out of the project.
A funny harbinger of the issues to come was courtesy of the un-concerned building inspector, who was actually a real tool. When I asked about some supporting pressure treated posts that had been set by someone under the basement joists. He said quote - those are temporary. Great to hear dude! but can you embellish the mystery of that statement with a little more flourish. Temporary. To code? Rotten in 10 years? Imminently unstable? In all likelihood, this will be a deep retrofit of sorts.
The time line for move in is ASAP, not to pay double rent, so it is basically all systems go...
